About Tallaght Wells Loft
These wells are located within a large pit that has a slope of rocky hills around it. Also, some wells are located on top of the pit and on a relatively gentle slope.
It is said that these wells were about 366 in the past, but 266 of them have been filled and now there are about 100 of them.
In 976, the wells were dug by the servants of the ruler of Loft, Khajeh Karim, to compensate for the lack of water.
due to the general slope of all the hills around the pit, all the wells are full of water when it is raining.
People take water from wells throughout the year. The wells inside the pit have an average of 2 to 3.5 meters’ depth and the wells above the pit have depth of 5 to 6 meters.
Outside of this pit, on the back side where Loft village begins, there are several other wells. The water of these wells is salty, so animals drink it. There were protectors of the wells in the past that they were selected among the women of the village. The protectors were in charge of extracting water from the wells and in the years of drought they tried to give water equally to the people of Loft.
in the past, all of the people of Loft used to clean the wells and nowadays, they have tried to maintain the tradition.
In other areas, most of the wells have taken their name from their diggers, but wells of this place have taken their name from their shape and other features.
