Why Is It Called Niavaran Palace?
In the past, Niavaran region of Tehran was full of canes from where people collected and used them, so it is renowned as Niavaran; Nei, meaning cane in English, Avaran, meniang providing in English.
History of Niavaran Palace
Nivaran garden was built instead of cane lane in the neighborhood of the village that was called “Gorde Wey”. The garden which belonged to Fath Ali Shah Qajar is now called “Naivaran. Mohammad Shah also built a small building in this garden, and after him, Naser al-Ddin Shah Qajar built “Sahebqariani Palace” here. The last building built in the garden during the Qajar era is Ahmad Shahi’s palace.
The construction of this palace was initiated by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in 1337 and ended in 1346. In the time of Fathali Shah Qajar, a smaller palace was located at the current site of Niavaran Palace, which was demolished by Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and replaced by Niavaran Palace.
The building was erected in an area of 9000 square meters in two and a half floor, initially considered as a place for foreign guests, but when the construction was completed, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and his family lived there.
Niavaran Palace was designed by Engineer Mohsen Foroghi. Also, the painting was done by Professor Abdollahi, mirroring by Professor Ali Asghar and the exterior tiling by Professor Ebrahim Kazempour.
The ground floor of this building consists of a large hallway with all the rooms formed around it. The rooms include an exclusive cinema, a dining room, a lounge, a waiting room and adjoining corridors, as well as a water hall. In the half-floor of the building, the working room, the conference room and the office of Farah Diba`s secretary, and the bedroom of Layla and her maid room are located.
On the third floor, the bedroom and the resting place of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi are situated, there are also Farah Diba`s dressing and hairdresser room, as well as rooms for the children of Mohammad Reza Shah and their maids. Exquisite collection of paintings by Iranian and foreign artists, Chinese porcelain warehouses of Sor factory of France and Rosenthal of Germany, and decorative objects as well as the exquisite Persian carpets can be found in these rooms. This building is now open to the public as a museum.
