Khaju Bridge

Khaju Bridge is a bridge in Isfahan city, Iran, which has been described as the finest in the province. It was built by the Persian Safavid king, Abbas II around 1650, on the foundations of an older bridge. Serving as both a bridge, and a dam (or a weir), it links the Khaju quarter on the north bank with the Zoroastrian quarter across the Zayandeh River.

The bridge had also different names like Kingly , Baba Roknoddin, Hasan Abad, And Shiraz bridge.

Architecture of the Bridge

It has the best architecture between all bridges in Isfahan. This bridge has been the most beautiful place in Isfahan since Safavid era up to now. In the middle of the bridge, there is a small octagonal building with some paintings named Shah Neshin, that was a place for high order people that were sitting there for watching swimming and sailing competition. Length of the bridge is 113 meters with height of 12.

The bridge is consisted of 24 water entrances. It is built with care and it has excoriated cubes. In the eastern part of the bridge, there are 2 stone lions as symbol of guards in Safavid era and Bakhtiari soldiers.

History of the Bridge

The bridge was built in Safavid era by order of King Abbas the ll on the ruin parts of Hasan Beik bridge. The name of Khaju derivate from Khajeh (name of high rank and kings during Safavid era). The bridge is placed in east ending part of Kamal Esmaeel and south ending part of Khaju street. Researchers say that the goal of building the bridge is to make connection among Khaju street, Hassan Abad gate, Takhte-Foolad and Shiraz way.

Poems about the Bridge

Some of the poets like Saeb Tabrizi, wrote poems about the bridge and described it. In the description, a celebration is held near the bridge at night.

Archeology of the Bridge

This bridge made a connection between Isfahan and Shiraz way. Architecture of the bridge was different from other bridges, because this bridge not only was built for transferring, but also it was in the way of water as a dam. By blocking the water’s way in the past, it made a lake with a good view.

The bridge is a good historical place for tourists. If you travel to Isfahan, you will see some tourists in this city visiting the bridge every year.


Location

The bridge is placed on the east ending part of Kamal Esmaeel street and west part of Abshar street and Ayine Khane Boulevard.
